‘Well done, Jaskaran Singh’: 22-year-old student wins ‘Jeopardy’ championship

A 22-year-old student from the University of Texas (UT), Jaskaran Singh, won the final of the national college championship “Jeopardy” on Tuesday. Singh, a senior finance and economics major from Plano, Texas, was awarded $25,000 after his win over Northeastern University’s Liz Feltner and Kennesaw State’s Raymond Goslow, KVIEW reported.

“[It] feels pretty awesome,” Singh said as quoted by the Jeopardy website. “It will definitely go a long way towards paying my tuition (fees) and much more,” he added.

Celebrating Singh’s victory, the UT Tower was lit up in burnt orange on Tuesday, according to the UT website. Singh advanced to the final round after winning the semi-finals on February 18. On February 11, Singh won the quarter-finals and won $19,000 after answering a question about Ukraine, according to a KVIEW report.

After winning the quarter-finals, Singh was quoted as saying by University of Texas News (UT News) that he is overwhelmed by the support of his Longhorn family.

singh said UT News that his mother made him apply for Jeopardy when he was 13 years old. She encouraged me to try again last year saying, ‘What could be worse?’ A lot of this stuff is random, but obviously it worked.

“I’m a normal guy, but I like to read the news to follow what’s going on, and I especially like to learn history. The videos that YouTube recommends to me are pretty cheesy based on my preferences,” he added.

The college tournament, hosted by Mayim Bialik, was contested by 36 American undergraduate students over nine days. Jeopardy, the popular American game show, challenges participants with intense quizzes and broadcasts on ABC.

Singh’s Linkedin profile says he volunteered as a Punjabi language teacher for three months in 2018. He also taught Sikh history to children and he has a native or bilingual command of the Punjabi language.
