Amenfi West MP Eric Afful looks forward to the government honoring its promise to pay affected cocoa farmers in his constituency.
His concerns follow a question he posed to Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto in parliament on Wednesday June 9 about when the government will release money for pay affected cocoa farmers whose farms have been contracted Ghana COCOBOD for the over-aged cocoa plantation rehabilitation program in Ghana given the season.
In response to the question, Dr Afriyie Akoto said that COCOBOD has targeted a total of 91,400 hectares of diseased cocoa plantations, for rehabilitation with funding from the African Development Bank / Credit Suisse (AfDB / CS).
Rehabilitation involves the treatment and replanting of cocoa trees affected by Cocoa Swollen Shoot Disease (CSSVD).
During the current year 2021, COCOBOD has covered a total of 22,375.25 hectares of cocoa plantations under the rehabilitation program. A total of 10,310,681.54 was paid to 11,289 affected farmers.
“Likewise, 418 landowners with a total area of 454.48 hectares of cocoa plantations have been compensated in the amount of GH 454,480.00 ₵ at the time of writing. Processes are still underway to pay additional landowners on time, ”he said.
