Special elections in several barangays in Tubaran, Lanao del Sur could be held on May 24.
“Under article 7 of the omnibus electoral code, we must ensure that the cause of the failure of the election must have ceased first. This is why our projection is May 24 for the special elections in Tubaran,” Acting Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said during a press briefing on Saturday May 14.
“At the moment, the situation there is contained. The violence has been suppressed and controlled, and all preparations are underway to continue the special elections,” he added.
“For Tubaran, no need to print ballots, no need to prepare VCMs. All of that is with us and intact,” Laudiangco said.
The May 11 polling station declared elections failed in 14 barangays in the municipalities of Butig, Binadayan and Tubaran in Lanao del Sur.
The Comelec en banc decided to adopt the recommendation of the Regional Director of Elections of the Autonomous Region of Bangsamoro in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Ray Sumalipao, to declare the failure of the polls in the said areas involving more than 40 constituencies grouped together.
Elections were declared a failure in all 12 barangays of Tubaran due to violence, threats and intimidation.
