Restless farmer unions should challenge Punjab assembly polls: Gurnam Singh Chaduni: The Tribune India

Chandigarh, July 7

The outfits involved in agitation by farmers against new farm laws are expected to stand for the Punjab assembly election as they “will present a model for how the system can be changed,” the president said on Wednesday. of the Union Haryana Bharatiya Kisan (Chaduni) Gurnam Singh Chaduni.

Chaduni, a key leader of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SMK) who is spearheading the agitation of the farmers, said, “What I mean is we shouldn’t be running ‘Mission UP, but Mission Punjab ‘. SKM is planning a ‘mahapanchayat’ in September and other activities in Uttar Pradesh, which will go to the polls next year. “

“Now we are moving for Mission UP. A Mahapanchayat will be held on September 5. Other activities will take place. Then polls will come and we will work to defeat the BJP.”

“If we assume that the BJP is defeated, will the Center then accept our demands?” Don’t take it any other way, ”Chaduni said in a video message, and cited the example of West Bengal, where peasant organizations campaigned against BJP.

“The BJP was beaten there, but the Center then accepted our request,” he asked.

Chaduni said even the opposition has not categorically stated that if they come to power, these laws will be repealed and a law guaranteeing the MSP will be drafted. In the video post, Chaduni said that “we say we want to change the system, but don’t give enough thought to what needs to be done to achieve that”. the system, “so who should we expect to do this from?”

“If we are to change the system, then we will have to formulate a plan. And this plan should be ‘Punjab Mission’, ”he said. Notably, the Punjab goes to the polls early next year. Agitation by farmers over farm laws began last year in the state before spreading to other areas, with protesting farmers now sitting at Delhi’s borders for more than seven months to support their demands for ‘annulment of agricultural laws.

“So many Punjabi bodies are playing an active role in this turmoil. But if they step into the electoral arena and challenge the polls in Punjab and grab power and show how things can be changed, it can be presented as an example, a model to show how a government can be run, which can serve as an example for the rest of the country, ”Chaduni said. He said the people of Punjab are looking for a change.

“Why can’t we win polls in Punjab… the people of Punjab want a change in the system. Therefore, Mission Punjab is needed so that he can be shown as a model. If there is a farmers ‘and workers’ government in place, we can show that it can be done, ”he said. Chaduni’s statement sparked a strong reaction from the BJP in Punjab, with senior leader Harjit Singh Grewal saying it is now clear that the unrest unions were politically motivated.

“The fact that their motivation is political is no longer hidden,” Grewal said. – PTI
