Two Dunedin institutions have come together to allow school teams from across New Zealand to participate in two online quizzes.
Changes to the ODT in addition! The Spelling Bee and Current Events quizzes were created with the collaboration of Allied Press, publisher of the Otago Daily Times and Dunedin’s digital educator, Education Perfect (EP) earlier this year.
This allowed the competitions to be offered online from the EP office in Dunedin.
Led by the Otago Daily Schedules since 2003, quizzes were previously physically organized in a series of age group competitions in several areas of Otago and South Canterbury.
Since its opening to the whole country, the number of participating students and the level of competitiveness of the quizzes have exploded.
” We are delighted to be the home of the ODT in addition! quiz this year, ” said Emma McAllister, EP director of operations.
“This provides a fantastic opportunity for two local businesses in Dunedin to present this popular quiz to many other schools in New Zealand. It offers an interactive digital competition extended to those still under the current lockdown, and with over 1,000 teams participating, we are able to automatically score and announce the winners on the same day. ”
In early June, nearly 570 teams from primary, middle and secondary schools (around 1,700 years old 5-10 students) competed in the new ODT in addition! Online spelling.
Vying for national titles in their age group, they have come from as far north as Kerikeri and as far south as Tokanui.
Teams could see each other through a Zoom audio-visual link, and the quiz questions came in the form of a series of audio and visual files that asked students to complete specific tasks.
These included the spelling of certain words, proofreading exercises and answers to questions about abbreviations and the origin of words.
And in September, more than 1,000 teams of three participated in the ODT in addition! Quiz on the news. ODT in addition! Marketing Director Jeff Paterson said the top 10 teams from each year group will join the top teams in the ODT in addition! Spelling quiz for the grand finale at the Otago Museum this month.
The format of the quiz is 10 rounds covering questions of local and international geography, history, current affairs and general knowledge.
Feedback on the school questionnaires has been “overwhelmingly favorable,” Paterson said.
