Native Solar Sponsored Content: How Alternative Energy Reduces ERCOT’s Summer Heat Savings

CONTENT SPONSORED BY NATIVE SOLAR – Most people would think that if Texas couldn’t handle the snow, we would at least be able to handle the heat, right? If there’s one thing Texans don’t know, it’s the humidity and sunshine that come with daylight saving time. So if Texans have seen temperatures like this before, then why is ERCOT issuing warnings about energy use and what does that mean for solar consumers?

Who is ERCOT?

ERCOT (Texas Electrical Reliability Council) is a state-run, non-profit organization responsible for providing over 90% of electricity to Texans. Texas is unique in this regard because we are the only state in the United States to have an organization like ERCOT. Electricity in other parts of the country is controlled by the federal government and is divided into two parts of the grid that control the eastern and western states. This grouping of states is advantageous because in situations such as a statewide power outage, the power supply may be transferred from other states in the same group to supply the blackout state the electricity it needs. Residents of Texas, however, continue to face blackouts and close calls when faced with inclement weather conditions as they cannot receive help from sources other than the ERCOT. .

How to put the “R” back in ERCOT?

In an effort to maintain grid resiliency, ERCOT recently issued notices to all residents of Texas asking us to reduce our energy use. Announcements have been sent by several Texas energy providers asking their customers to take action as well. GEXA, a retail supplier in Houston, has advised customers to turn up their thermostats, unplug or turn off unnecessary appliances, and avoid the use of large appliances like dishwashers and washing machines during peak hours to reduce the amount of energy used and avoid potential outage.

But we’ve seen these temperatures before, so why are we getting warnings now? According to ERCOT officials, these advisories were issued due to high energy demand and an unexpected number of power plants in need of repair. These notices have become a huge inconvenience for most residents of Texas, as many people are unwilling to deviate from their typical electrical habits. However, despite these warnings, our solar customers face a different reality than most.

How solar saves in summer

Solar energy consumers are enjoying a much more relaxed summer than their grid-connected counterparts. During the summer months, solar power is proving increasingly beneficial, especially at a time when grid power is unreliable. By having solar panels, you can use the sun to power your home and get your electricity back! In the event of a power failure, “prosumers” who have combined storage can disconnect from the grid entirely and maintain their electricity through a nanogrid (home energy system). Having solar panels is going to be essential for the comfort of Texas residents this season. Austin residents recorded triple-digit numbers last week and temperatures will continue to climb as we move into the summer months. While ERCOT is already struggling to meet Texans’ energy demands in early summer, things will only get worse as temperatures rise and demand for energy increases.

What you can do

If you don’t have a home energy system, the best thing to do during this time is to follow ERCOT’s advice and reduce your energy consumption by turning off unnecessary appliances, setting your thermostat to 78 and by monitoring your electricity consumption. This will save you money and give Texans a better chance of avoiding blackouts.

Another useful thing you can do is research your location as a candidate for solar power. Summers will continue to get hotter and ERCOT’s role will not change anytime soon. One of the best things for many clients is to invest in solar power now, lock in your rate, and then save money and stress in the long run. By investing in solar power, you can harvest power for yourself and use alternative energy to save money and avoid worrying about power outages during times when you need it most. of energy.
