West Lafayette, Indiana – After 629 days without fans at the Holloway Gymnasium, the Purdue No.8 Volleyball team defeated LMU, 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20) in front of a sold-out crowd in the opening of the season.
The momentum took a final turn in Purdue’s direction in the third set, when despite falling 14-16, the Boilermakers went on a 7-2 streak to steal the set and the game’s final victory.
The Boilermakers were led by Newton, a fifth-year raiser, whose 14 kills gave way to an attack percentage of 0.414%, his highest since September 20, 2019. The out hitter recorded 14 kills and only two errors out of 29 swings.
As a team, four hitters were over 0.400 (Newton, Raven Colvin, Taylor trammell and Grace Cleveland) and five above .300 (addition of Emma Ellis). Additionally, the Boilermaker serve led to seven aces, with Hornung and Jena Otec lead the way with two each.
2020 AVCA All-America passer and honorable mention Hayley bush produced 41 assists while adding eight digs. Libero Marissa hornung produced the team’s 15 best recoveries.
In her early days at university, blocker in the middle Raven Colvin went without error with four kills in eight swings (.500).
Highlights of Series 1:
Maddy Chinn and Newton with three wins each. Newton, Cleveland and Bush went perfectly in the set. Defensively, Newton led the team with four digs.

Trammell went flawless with three kills on four swings for a 0.750% hitting percentage. Bush had 13 assists, the most in a set tonight.

Only one Boilermaker mistake was made during the set, propelling the team to a .423% offense. Purdue’s block fell into place, registering two blocks, which Trammell assisted on both. Cleveland led with four wins, meanwhile Emma Ellis and Raven Colvin made their first appearance in the set, producing two kills and one respectively. It was Colvin’s first college murder.
