A 49-year-old man is accused of stabbing his 82-year-old father in a Massachusetts house last week before barricading himself inside the house while he was armed with a knife, authorities said.

Jeffrey Foresta, of Ayer, has since been arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60 in connection with the knife attack on February 27, the prosecutor’s office said Middlesex District Marian Ryan in a statement. statement Tuesday.

Ayer police responded to a 911 call from a Littleton Road house shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday and found the victim outside the house with a stab wound. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and eventually released, the statement said.

Authorities said officers learned that Foresta was armed with a knife and barricaded himself inside the house.

Police attempted to speak with the suspect, but were unsuccessful, Ryan’s office said. For the safety of Foresta’s family and neighboring residents, authorities have requested more support and a negotiator from the SWAT team at the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council.

The first NEMLEC agents arrived at the scene and began negotiations with the suspect. The SWAT team then entered the house through the front door with a key provided by a family member. Foresta was taken into custody and taken to the Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, according to the district attorney’s office.

He was arraigned in Ayer District Court on Monday and ordered to undergo a mental health assessment. His next scheduled hearing is March 19.
