Disney-owned channels have gone dark on YouTube TV

Update: Changed to include YouTube TV message to subscribers

With Disney and YouTube TV unable to compromise on the terms of a renewal of a distribution agreement, Disney-owned channels went dark on YouTube TV, just before the midnight deadline.

YouTube TV has let subscribers know they risk losing channels, including Disney affiliates, ESPN and ABC, when the companies disagreed on the terms of their distribution deal earlier this week. In a note to subscribers, YouTube TV said, “Disney is an important partner for us. We are in active conversation with them and strive to keep their content on YouTube TV. Our request to Disney, like all of our partners, is to treat YouTube TV like any other TV provider – offering us the same rates that similarly sized services pay, on Disney channels for as long as we broadcast them.

The following channels and associated VOD content have been removed:

  • Your local ABC channel
  • ABC News Live
  • disney channel
  • Disney junior
  • Disney xd
  • Free form
  • FX
  • FXX
  • FXM
  • National geography
  • National Geographic Wild
  • ESPN
  • ESPN2
  • ESPN3 (by authentication to the ESPN app)
  • ESPNU
  • ESPNEWS
  • SEC Network
  • ACC Network

Because the two couldn’t come to an agreement, YouTube TV pledged to drop the price of the streaming service by $ 15 per month.

YouTube TV sent the following message to subscribers:

We have been in good faith negotiations with Disney for several months. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to come to a fair deal before the existing deal expired.

As of December 17, 2021, late afternoon Eastern Time, not all Disney-owned channels, including ESPN and your local ABC station, are available on YouTube TV. Members will not be able to watch live or local Disney content and will also lose access to all previous recordings in those channels’ library, including 4K content available as part of the 4K Plus add-on.

We’ll be reducing our monthly price by $ 15, from $ 64.99 to $ 49.99, for the basic plan until that content is available on our platform. No action is required on your part. A credit of $ 15 per month will be automatically issued. Once content is unavailable, this credit will be applied to your next bill after December 17, and will only be visible to family managers in Settings> Billing after billing has been completed. Please note that if you get a promotional price with YouTube TV, you can still expect a $ 15 credit. Members on a break will receive this credit one month after their first charge. If we come to an agreement with Disney, we will adjust the price accordingly and notify members by email in advance.

We know this is frustrating news, and it’s not the outcome we wanted. We will continue conversations with Disney to advocate for your interests in the hope of restoring their content on YouTube TV.

If you want to switch to another live TV streaming service to keep the channels that have been deleted from YouTube TV, we recommend these four alternatives:
