Frank Lampard is one of Chelsea’s greatest legends, but there were still doubts when he arrived at Stamford Bridge from West Ham in 2001.
He made his debut against Newcastle in the first game of the 2001-02 Premier League season, but can you name the Chelsea team that started that game?
Lampard, the most scored midfielder in Premier League history, cost the west London club £11million.
He was signed by London rivals West Ham, where his father had played and where he had worked his way through the youth academy to become a first-team star under his uncle Harry Redknapp.
“He’s good enough and he will definitely be good enough,” Redknapp replied when a fan asked why the youngster had so many chances in the first team.
“I didn’t want to say that in front of him. But he will go all the way up.
“There is no doubt in my opinion. Because he has everything it takes to become a top midfielder. His attitude is first class. He has strength. He can play. He can pass it. And he can score goals.
And go to the top that Lampard did. At Chelsea he won it all, winning the Premier League three times, the FA Cup four times and of course the Champions League in 2012.
But do you remember the starting line-up in Lampard’s first game for Chelsea, a 1-1 against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on August 19, 2001? The office time to beat is 00:59 and we gave you Lampard for free.
If you want another challenge after that, why not try and name Chelsea’s starting XI in Claudio Ranieri’s last game as boss in 2004?
