A firefighter killed and another injured in a shooting at the Agua Dulce fire station; Shooter body found at home burning in Acton – CBS Los Angeles

AGUA DULCE (CBSLA) – A firefighter was shot and killed and another was injured by a firefighter on leave at a Los Angeles County fire station in Agua Dulce on Tuesday morning.

A body, believed to have been the gunman, was later found in a nearby burning house.

Filming took place at approximately 10:50 a.m. at LACFD Station # 81 in the 8700 block of the Sierra Highway.

“It is with a heavy heart that LACoFD confirms that a tragic shooting has occurred,” the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted.

During a 3 pm press conference, Fire Chief Daryl Osby said: “It is with a heavy heart that I stand here and say that one of our specialist firefighters has succumbed to his injuries. ” He said the shooting “was one of the worst news I’ve heard in my career.”

Osby confirmed that a 44-year-old man who had worked for the department for more than 20 years was killed in the shooting. He said a 54-year-old fire captain sustained gunshot wounds and was in critical but stable condition after being airlifted to Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia.

Osby said the shooter was a firefighter on leave who was not due to work on Tuesday. He said the gunman returned home, barricaded himself, set the house on fire and was later found dead although the coroner has yet to confirm the identity of the body found at the residence.

Authorities responded to a large house fire in the 2600 block of Bent Spur Drive in Acton, about 10 miles from the station.

Strong flames and smoke were seen rising from the house, and the body with a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound was found in the yard.

Fire crews sprayed the house with a drop of water in hopes of preventing the flames from spreading to nearby brush or other structures.

The blaze continued to burn early Tuesday afternoon with most of the structure burned to the ground.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., homicide investigators from the LA County Sheriff’s Department were seen from SKY2 arriving at Fire Station 81 where the shooting took place.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis posted on Twitter saying: “My deepest condolences to the family of the firefighter who was tragically killed in today’s shooting at Fire Station 81 in Agua Dulce. My thoughts are with our family @LACOFD. At my direction, flags will be hoisted halfway up on all buildings in the county. “

Neighbor Carol Dalrymple spoke to Jeff Nguyen of CBSLA and said the burning house had previously been featured in a designer magazine.

The house was sold less than a year ago for $ 700,000, according to online real estate records, and Carol Dalrymple says she doesn’t know if anyone is living there now or if it is rented.

Agua Dulce is located approximately 18 miles northeast of the city of Santa Clarita and approximately 40 miles north of Los Angeles.
